Eco-Information on the Western Cape, South Africa.
About 350 bird species can be seen in the Western Cape, making this region a hotspot for birdwatchers from all over the world. Fynbos endemics include Cape Siskin, Orange-breasted Sunbird, Cape Sugarbird, Cape Rockjumper, Protea Canary, Victorin's Warbler and Hottentot Buttonquail.
The Western Cape is home to South Africa's National Bird, the Blue Crane. Other large birds that can be seen here include Ostrich (seen in the wild in nature reserves), Stanley's Bustard, White Stork and a variety of Heron. Raptors include Verreaux's (Black) Eagle, Cape Vulture, African Fish-Eagle, Martial Eagle, Osprey, Jackal Buzzard, African Marsh-Harrier, Black Harrier, Booted Eagle, African Goshawk, African Harrier-Hawk, Rufous-chested Sparrowhawk, Black Sparrowhawk, Peregrine and Lanner Falcon, Rock and Lesser Kestrel.
